(Dis)similarity-based exploration

Frequently, response variables show complex or seemingly arbitrary responses to a gradient. Alternatively, an ecological gradient may not have been sampled completely or at all. Nonetheless, it is still possible to explore the response data by examining how (dis)similar each sampled object is relative to the others.
